Does moving your monitors fix boomy bass?

Moving your monitors or your chair changes which bass notes boom, but it rarely removes the boom. Start with placement, then deal with the note that's left.

Placement is free, so it's the right place to start. Just know what it can and can't do.

What moving changes

Where you sit and where your speakers stand decide which bass notes pile up at your ears. Move either one and the boom shifts.

What it can't change

The room's size stays the same, so it keeps booming at its own notes. You can move a boom around, but you can't move it out of the room.

A good starting point

  • Keep your monitors away from the wall behind them.
  • Sit where the two speakers and your head make a triangle.
  • Don't sit in the exact middle of the room.

The free Monitor Placement tool shows where to sit and where each monitor goes for your room's size.
