Room scan

Most scan messages clear up once the room is quiet.

The scan is waiting for a quieter room.

Pause music and video, and stop talking. The scan carries on by itself once the room is quiet.

It says the test sound is too quiet or too loud.

Turn your speakers up or down a little. The scan carries on by itself when the level is right.

Unboom can’t use my microphone.

Choose Open Microphone Settings in Unboom, turn Unboom on, then choose Try microphone again. On Windows, turn on microphone access in Windows Settings, under Privacy. You can also find the boom by ear instead.

The scan couldn’t find one clear boom.

Try again when the room is quiet, or choose Find it by ear instead. Press That’s the boom when the tone suddenly sounds louder or makes the room vibrate.

Do I need a measurement microphone?

No. Your computer’s microphone works. Put your laptop or microphone where you normally sit.

Can I use Bluetooth speakers?

Yes, but Bluetooth adds delay and can drop out. Connect your speakers with a cable for the most reliable result.

Correction

When Unboom pauses, its window tells you why.

Unboom says it’s paused.

The line under the switch says what it needs. Usually it’s one of these:

Connect the speakers you set up.
Choose those speakers as your Mac’s sound output. Sound Settings… takes you there.
Quit the other copy of Unboom. Only one copy can correct your Mac’s audio.
Start the free trial, or unlock Unboom once the trial has ended.

Unboom couldn’t reach Mac audio.

Choose Try Again. If Unboom shows Privacy Settings…, choose it first and allow Unboom to record system audio. That’s how it corrects sound as it plays.

Does Unboom record my audio?

No. Your computer’s audio is corrected as it plays, and it’s never saved or sent. Read the privacy policy.

My DAW sounds the same with Unboom on.

DAWs, and apps using your microphone, play without correction so they aren’t delayed. Add the Unboom plug-in to correct your DAW. On Windows, DAWs using ASIO or exclusive mode play uncorrected, and there’s no plug-in.

My headphones sound the same.

That’s on purpose. Unboom corrects only the speakers you set up, and leaves headphones and other outputs alone.

How do I turn it off?

Flip the switch in the menu bar. Quitting Unboom also brings your normal sound straight back. On Windows, flip it in the notification area: the correction keeps working with Unboom closed, so quitting doesn’t turn it off.

I can’t find Unboom.

If you hid it from both the menu bar and the Dock, it keeps running. Open it again from Applications or Spotlight. On Windows, open it from the Start menu.

DAW plug-in

On Mac, your DAW lists it as Unboom: Room Correction.

Where do I add the plug-in?

Unboom shows you while your DAW plays. The step for each DAW:

Logic Pro: Click an Audio FX slot on the Stereo Out channel and choose Audio Units › Unboom › Room Correction. Add it to your template to have it in new projects.
GarageBand: Choose Track › Show Master Track, then add Unboom › Room Correction to the master track’s plug-ins.
MainStage: Add Unboom › Room Correction to your concert’s output channel strip.
Ableton Live: Turn on Audio Units in Settings › Plug-Ins, then drag Unboom: Room Correction onto the Main track.
FL Studio: Find Unboom with Options › Manage plugins, then add it to the Master insert in the Mixer.
REAPER: Choose View › Monitoring FX, click Add, and pick Unboom. REAPER keeps it for every project.
LUNA: Add Unboom: Room Correction as an insert on the main output.

The plug-in doesn’t show up.

Open the Unboom app once, then look again. Your DAW lists the plug-in after the app has launched.

Does the plug-in affect my exports?

Yes, when it’s on your master track, so bypass it before you export or mix on headphones. In REAPER it goes in Monitoring FX, which exports skip.

Do I switch it off in my DAW too?

No. The plug-in follows Unboom’s room and switch, so one switch turns off both.

My DAW isn’t on the list.

The plug-in doesn’t work in it yet. It plays without correction, so it’s never delayed.

Rooms

Each room keeps its own speakers and correction.

How do I add a room?

Choose Add Room… from the Room menu in the menu bar or Unboom’s window, then scan the new room. On Windows, it’s Add Setup….

How does Unboom pick a room?

It switches when a room’s speakers become your computer’s sound output. You can also pick a room from the Room menu.

I moved my speakers.

Choose Recalibrate… to find the boom again. Your current setting stays until you keep a new one.

How do I rename or delete a room?

Open the Room menu in Unboom’s window. Deleting a room leaves your other rooms as they are.

Windows

Unboom adds its effect to the speakers you set up.

Which installer do I need?

Most PCs need the standard installer. If Windows Settings › System › About says ARM-based processor, get the ARM installer instead.

Windows says it protected my PC.

Choose More info, then Run anyway. The installer asks for administrator permission because Unboom adds its effect to Windows audio.

Windows isn’t running Unboom on my speakers.

Choose Turn On… and allow the permission Windows asks for. If Unboom says audio enhancements are off, choose Fix….

Unboom says my speakers’ driver uses its own sound effects.

Unboom never replaces a driver’s own effects, so it can’t correct those speakers yet. It leaves them exactly as they were.

How do I remove Unboom?

Uninstall it from Windows Settings › Apps. Every change it made to your speakers is undone.

Trial and purchases

On Mac, Apple handles payment. On Windows, Polar does.

How do I restore my purchase?

Sign in to the Mac App Store with the Apple Account you bought Unboom with. Then open Unboom’s Settings and choose Restore Purchases. It works on another Mac too. On Windows, Unboom stays unlocked after a reinstall. On a new PC, enter your license key.

What happens when the trial ends?

After 14 days, room scans stay free. Correcting your computer’s audio needs the one-time unlock.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once and keep it. There’s no account to create.

How do I unlock Unboom on Windows?

Choose Unlock Unboom to buy through Polar, which emails you a license key. Then choose Enter License Key… and paste it.

How do I move my license to another PC?

In Unboom’s Settings on the old PC, choose Remove from This PC. Then enter your key on the new one. If the old PC is gone, write to us.

Does one purchase cover Mac and Windows?

No. Each is unlocked in its own app: through the Mac App Store on a Mac, and with a license key on Windows.

The purchase didn’t go through.

Check that you’re online and signed in to the App Store, then try again. If a parent has to approve it, Unboom unlocks once they do. On Windows, check that you’re online when you enter your key.

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles refunds for Mac App Store purchases. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. On Windows, email support@unboom.app from the address you bought with.
