How is the note worked out?

With standard tuning, where A4 is 440 Hz. Each note is about 6% higher than the one below it, and going up an octave doubles the frequency.

What are cents?

Hundredths of the step between two neighboring notes. Most people can’t hear a difference smaller than about 5 to 10 cents.

Why know the note my room booms at?

Bass notes that land on it sound louder and last longer than the rest. Knowing the note tells you which ones to listen for.
