How this works
Bass bounces between opposite walls, and between the floor and ceiling. A note whose half wavelength fits that distance, once or several times, builds up. Acousticians call these axial room modes.
The first one is 343 ÷ (2 × distance), with the distance in meters. Multiply it by 2, 3, and so on for the rest. Where several land close together, the boom is usually strongest.
It assumes a rectangular room with solid walls, and leaves out weaker booms that bounce around corners.
Questions
Why does my room boom at certain notes?
Bass bounces between your walls, floor, and ceiling. At notes that fit the distance between them, the reflections stack up, so those notes sound louder and last longer. Acousticians call them room modes.
Why only length, width, and height?
The booms between two opposite surfaces are usually the strongest, and they depend only on the distance between them. The calculator assumes a rectangular room with solid walls.
Why doesn’t it match what I hear?
Real rooms aren’t perfect boxes. Soft walls, open doors, furniture, and where you sit all shift the boom. Boom Finder finds the one in your room.
Does this fix the boom?
No. It tells you where to listen. Unboom, the Mac app, finds the boom in your room and turns down just that note in everything your Mac plays on your speakers.
Do bass traps still help?
